Afterburn effect

I seem to be back to pre-Taiwan weight.  I believe it is the long runs - ever since the training plan took me to longer and longer runs, the weight just falls right off.

Just finished the 25km Passion run.  First 10km really slow for a number of reasons.
- It was a tight squeeze, East Coast Parkway is too cramp and people kept jostling me and then glaring at me like it's my fault.  Hey, I'm charting an easy path at an easy pace, just stop cutting me off already!
- I ate a huge lunch at 2:30pm thinking it should be somewhat digested and fuel enough to last the whole run.  It was too much, argh... The middle of me (diaphram? stomach?) ache throughout the run.
- 4:30pm flag off is too early, it was so warm still.  Apparently the heavy downpour all over Singapore, missed the East Coast.  It was  dry and hot.

Beyond 10km, people settled to their comfortable pace, and the crowd spread out more, ahh better!  It was around the 18km mark, that I realized I was on track for a sub-3hr run (somehow Francis' earlier estimate of 3.5hrs stuck in my head).  Plus my legs felt good, so at the 20km mark, I up-ed the pace to an easy 2:56 finish.

Here's an article I read on the New York Times on afterburn effect.

For an Exercise Afterburn, Intensity May Be the Key

Joshua Lott for The New York Times

Depending on whom you ask, the answer to this question is either one of the great myths of exercise or one of the great unappreciated truths: Is there an afterburn effect from a workout?

Whether the metabolism speeds up for hours after exercise an old question, first studied a century ago, and over the years, study after study has been carried out, with decidedly mixed results. Some investigators found no post-exercise effect. Others reported effects so small they were almost unnoticeable — one found male triathletes burned just 12 to 30 extra calories after a workout. Others found as many as 700 additional calories were burned after a long and exhausting exercise session.

The latest sally comes in a recent paper in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Its lead author, Amy A. Knab of Appalachian State University, says it trumps studies that preceded it because of its careful design. And its results are good news — sort of.

Dr. Knab and her colleagues recruited 10 men, ages 22 to 33, who agreed to spend two periods of 24 hours each in a metabolic chamber, a small room that measures the calories people burn while they are inside. The men were not all athletes, but they did have to be able to ride a bike vigorously.

On the first visit to the chamber, the subjects had to stay perfectly still, sitting in a chair and moving only to eat meals, which were sent in through an air lock. In the afternoon, they were permitted a two-minute stretch every hour. Bedtime was 10:30 p.m. At 6:30 the next morning, the subjects were awakened and allowed to leave. They burned, on average, 2,400 calories on this totally sedentary day.

The second visit to the chamber came two days later. Everything was the same, with one exception. At 11 a.m., the subjects rode a stationary bicycle at a high intensity for 45 minutes.

The exercise itself burned about 420 calories, Dr. Knab and her colleagues reported. But what was most interesting was the calories burned afterward. Over the next 14 hours, the men burned an extra 190 calories, increasing the total calories burned by 37 percent.

“We were surprised,” Dr. Knab said. She thought there might be extra calories burned, but she did not expect so many, nor did she expect the effect to last so long.

She suspects one reason she saw such a pronounced effect was that the exercise was so intense. The subjects had had to cycle at 70 percent of their so-called VO2 max, the maximum amount of oxygen a person’s body can take in during exercise — an effort that made them breathe too heavily to carry on a conversation. And they had to keep it up for 45 minutes.

A different study, also using a metabolic chamber, tested the effects of moderate exercise and found no afterburn. Those subjects exercised at 50 percent of their VO2 max, a level that still allows conversation.

Claude Bouchard, a scientist at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., along with other researchers, investigated the exercise effect with conventional methods using a mouthpiece and nose clip or a ventilated hood to determine oxygen used and carbon dioxide exhaled. From those measures, researchers can calculate calories burned.

They find, he says, that when studies are done properly (many are not), extra calories are burned in the hours after exercise — but only if subjects exercise at least as hard and long as Dr. Knab’s subjects. And if they exercise even harder, they burn even more calories afterward.

A recent book that Dr. Bouchard and a colleague edited notes two studies that found this effect. The researchers found that if subjects ran at 70 percent of their VO2 max or cycled at 75 percent of it, they could burn 300 to 700 extra calories after the exercise was over, though 700 calories was unusual.

It is not clear why extra calories should be burned after a bout of intense exercise, Dr. Bouchard says. Part of the effect may be due to post-exercise energy metabolism: the body starts using more fat and less carbohydrate after a hard exercise session. Several hormones that are released during exercise remain elevated in the blood afterward, increasing metabolism. And extra calories may be burned when the body replenishes glycogen, the sugar stored in muscles. But for the most part, the effect remains a mystery.

Whatever the cause, researchers say, the extra calories burned after exercise can help people lose weight. Unfortunately, those who may have the most to lose may have the hardest time doing the sort of exercise that gives them a calorie-burning bonus.

The usual guideline for general health is 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. That’s doable for most people and should increase heart health, even if it provides no calorie bonus.

But that sort of moderate exercise, Dr. Bouchard said, “is what we recommend — that’s the target.”

What is mercy?

Perhaps Thu or Fri, I was at midday mass and thinking of human relationships and it struck me that if my God can be merciful enough to die for me while I am a sinner, why can't I forgive someone like Monica?

The test came today.

At the wall today, Derek walked by and wanted to take a group photo, muttering how we have many group photos while cycling but none while climbing.  He managed to gather 4-5 people, who all walked over, just as Yili & I were exchanging climbing calls & I placed a foot up on the blue route.  I told Derek to proceed without me.  I really wanted to do that blue route well today.  Then I heard Monica cheerfully sing about how the group shot can be taken angled upwards so that it includes me... She went on and on, as if she's so popular and wanted me in the photo, like we're BFF or something.  Pffft.

I still recall the horror of her wheels bearing down on my head from last week.  Or the too many times when she walked past me, only to turn her face.

To rub injury to insult, Derek proceeds to use Monica's phone after they did the group shot, to video me climbing that blue route.

Derek then nonchalantly walks over to show me his video skills.  Good thing I noticed it was Monica's phone and insisted he deleted it.

I know Derek's just insensitive - I don't blame him.  I also know Monica will never change nor ever feel bad or even reflect over the past.  And I ought to show mercy - my Lord taught me so.  But I tell you, it is easier said than done.

The whole gang went to grab a bite after the climb.  I chose to stay on, do a warm-down climb with Gabriel, take my time to shower and then drove over to Ian's for dinner.  As usual, seeing Matty has a way of making you feel better.  He is all innocence.

New kid on the block (again)

After being in a company a long time (read 11 years HP), I hate the insecurity of a totally new environment.

The false start with Motorola does not help!

Nontheless, company S thus far feels nice. There's F (she's executive director! Clearly doing well!) and V who won the role I had earlier interviewed for & lost. He reports to her. And I hear ST formerly iPAQ team. Cool - a little ex-HP alumnus :)

Also I have a cubical with walls & an actual door. V says it's indicative of a company that values people. Perhaps. It's really not a big deal to me, a simple work station suffices, but certainly it is a first & I'm pleasantly surprised.

Still got no badge nor computer, but only cos K, my new boss wanted me in asap. I literally signed contract Friday evening & show up for work Monday morning!

Scooted off & managed to get to evening mass at Novena. I'm happy.

Last LSD completed, whew!

Did the last LSD (long slow distance) run this Sun morning.  Thank goodness for Peter who asked to join me.  Cos I might otherwise have stayed in bed - as I did Sat morning, the day I intended to run.

Ran 3 laps of the 10km loop in Macritchie.  Didn't bring my iPhone cos my little pouch needed to carry too many things.  Based on my trusty Timex timing,
Lap 1 - 1:34 (walked half the time cos Peter's knees were hurting him).  Peter left after 1 lap.
Lap 2 - 1:27 (a little slow cos I took a pee break)
Lap 3 - 1:22 (very close to my usual 1:20 speed, not too bad indeed, cos I expected myself to wither)

Long run indeed, it was 4:26 in total.

I am tired.  Recovery cycle took a lot out of me just to hold 30km/h.  Last few Sundays when I rode after a hard run, I could still stay with the group.  Thankfully for Fong who came back after nursing a broken hand - I rode with him at a slower pace of 27-29km/h.

This is it.  Next week's LSD is the Passion 25km run.  And then it is marathon day itself!  Woo hoo!

Next run after the marathon - Army half marathon aka the Sheares bridge run aka Safra Bay run.  I love that race, my favourite.  Especially now that the whole Marina bay area is so nicely done up, it will be a very scenic run indeed!

Why is it all so complicated?

First it was the Monica fiasco, now there's a Corinna-Derek misunderstanding brewing.

Speaking of Monica... I fell over on my cleats (yes again).  I need to stop less abruptly so I can lean over the unclipped side - duh!  I keep losing balance trying to lean left.  So there I was, falling over in slow motion and all I saw was Monica's front wheels bearing down on my head as I lay vulnerable on the road.  Scared the jeepers out of me.  Was that really necessary?  I know you hate me, but was that really necessary?!

Ok, I digress.

Cor & Derek.  By right, they should click.  Both are totally independant & totally into sports.  Both share cycling as their fave sport of the moment, amongst others like climbing, hiking, swimming.  It is troubling to see them fall out over YMCA.  I tried to stand up for Derek, but in the process made things worse, dragging in poor Zi.  Alamak.  Apologies everyone.

Seriously though, Derek can lapse into queer moments (everyone's human!), but he is not stingy nor is he calculative.  In fact, he is very generous.  A lot of people in the group have benefitted over the past years from his generosity including myself - he has bought numerous meals, mounted more than 1 hangboard, given numerous car rides, celebrated birthdays, loaned his gear without hesitation (spared me needing to carry my rope/runners Taipei-Singapore-Krabi & then reverse), arranged trips, bought the group 100plus & drinks (excluding the time in Keelung when he bought rice wine instead of water when we were dying of thirst - even so, that was funny).   He even sacrificed his Aramis to spare us all from bio-warfare.

I am praying that this misunderstanding blows over soon.  Cos I really like Corinna, that plus her ability to cycle like a cyborg!

People are complicated.  Why can't things remain simple and friendships stay happy and cool?

I need Matty in times like this.  He is totally uncomplicated.  I love you Matty, hi5 with godma!

Hello 995, I need an ambulance!

Was at noon mass at Novena when the woman in front suddenly feel back onto the seat, I can see her eyeballs rolled back.

The person directly behind her (European accented, perhaps French?) looked at me ? in her eyes.  After like 2 seconds of blankness, I asked "are you ok?".  No response.  (Duh, how to answer in a faint?)

Frenchie and I shared more scared looks another couple of seconds.

Then Frenchie herself, tries a pat-pat "are you ok?"... Still no response.  (I thought we already established that a fainted person does not reply to questions!)

I pulled phone to dial 995 while kind people (who knew what to do), came over to help lay the fainted woman flat, apply medicated oil to her temples.

In the meantime, mass continues...

All too surreal for me.  I decided that I would go outside to wait for the ambulance.

Ambulance arrives in just a few minutes, but the paramedics want to know if there's a ramp nearby so they can push their stretcher up without overcoming the short flight of stairs.

I am not coherent in emergencies.  All I could stammer was, "she's just over that, up this little flight of stairs!".

Paramedics gave up on me, follow me up the stairs.

I squeeze back to my seat beside Frenchie and attempt to follow the mass while watching the paramedics carry Ms Fainted out.

Maria is me

Now that mom has gone to stay weekdays with Ian/Michelle, adding an extra pair of hands to deal with Matty (they use the word : little terror), I'm reveling in my new found freedom.  Rejoicing, living it up, enjoying the serenity... You get my drift right?

After a whole week & a weekend of Josh & Toby lounging around on the floor, that plus I woke up sneezing and it wouldn't cease all day today, was a clear indicator that it was time to clean house.  Cleaning is a small price to pay for freedom (which is priceless, as the Mastercard ad would tell you).

I vacuumed, moped, changed the bedsheets, did laundry, even wiping down furniture and surfaces.  If I may say so myself, an awesome job.  *clap clap*

Great job Felicia!  (Hey, everyone has validation needs, even someone as secure and comfortable in her own skin as I).

O lazy bones

Ok I remember now why most of this season's long runs are done in the morning despite the late morning scorching heat.

Because my pathetic self will is better in the mornings.

Ok I wasted all Saturday.

Tomorrow I remedy, today I remain a slug...

Singapore at the polls

I hope we lose the lousy unperforming ministers & MPs. Keep those doing a great job.

And why not?

Singapore is fundamentally performance oriented aren't we? Do badly, risk being sacked. Part & parcel of life.

Why then are politicians measured differently, especially when they are so well paid!

To the health minister who said if you are too poor to afford medical attention to move to a hospital in JB - you are out.

To the arrogant & out of touch ministers : Teo Chee Hean, Lim Swee Say - get out too.

To the minister who lost a terrorist and made light of it - leave, you fail.

To Vivian Balakrishnan for not wanting to increase welfare pay out to match cost of living & messing up YOG budget - time to leave.

To George Yeo - you are a great foreign minister. Please stay.

To Lily Neo - you really champion the needs of the poor. Perfect replacement for Vivian's role.

A good day

Got to mass, good sermon. Had a big lunch of kway chup to boost intestinal strength - IBS cramps kept me up last night.

Napped 15mins.

Canvassed funding for a friend's upcoming birthday present - got funding, bought present. All done in 1 hour. Proud of efficiency. *clap clap*

Went for bike fitting with Peter.

Late dinner & supper with Peter.

A good day.

General Elections 2011

It's a big eye opener to see fellow Singaporeans all uptight about the coming May 7 Polling Day.  In fact, it's great that most of my fellow countrymen aren't apathetic anymore.  I used to call it the Toa Payoh syndrome where you wouldn't care less unless it mattered directly.

Since I'm not entitled to vote, not sure if I would bring myself to vote the lousy bunch of independant candidates who couldn't even come early enough on nomination day.

My stance is still to vote based on performance of each and every MP.  I agree with George Yeo of Aljunied GRC.  Fundamentally, they are MPs and they serve a constituency, heck, they are paid $15000 per month to serve residents!

Constituencies that have been neglected the past 5 years and look like crap now, please, do the right thing and send the right message.

I do wish the residents of Aljunied & all voters wisdom to vote for the betterment of Singapore.

Happy birthday Matty

Was Matty's 1 month birthday Sunday.

Mom in her usual messy style was able to create quite a few boo-boos.  When I first appeared at Ah Neo's house to collect the Hainanese kweh, she was surprised cos she had told mom that she'll just bring those along with her.  Then mom gave messy directions to all our relatives, so I was kept away from the buffet table to find and pick up various aunties from all over Serangoon gardens.

After picking up yet another aunty and attacking the buffet table the 4th time, I knew I had overate.

Matty as usual had his best manners for his visitors.  He slept angelically, smiled when woken up and then would just go back to sleeping.

Right after everyone left, he started to fuss, and boy can he scream the house down.  Sigh.

Still, I love the little kiddo.  Happy birthday kiddo, now grow big and strong in God's love.

Cycling - I am starting to really like this

I decided to chicken out of the 100km in a day (to and back from Desaru) cos my legs are really sore from excessive running.  Plus Lemna needed someone to accompany her & I'm not confident of going fast enough to keep up with the guys, so it made perfect sense for me to cover sweeper duties.

Thankfully, Peter was kind enough to stop and wait with us.  Without time pressure on us, we could choose to wait out the driving rain which lasted almost 45mins.  Cycled comfortably to Sungei Ringit, ate 1 chendol, before deciding we'll cycle in the direction of Desaru, and turn around when we meet the others on their return from Desaru.  By which time, the rain had stopped, the cloud cover evaporated and back came the blazing sun.  Peter and I maintained 20km/hr, but then slowed to 18km/hr for Lemna.  Even so, we had to stop often to wait for her to close the gap between us.  Yeah, she must've been doing 14km/hr or so.  We joked how if we slow anymore, we'll fall over in our cleats.  But yeah, nice and easy pace.

At the 33km mark, we saw Grayson flying away, leaning on his tri-bars.  So we all u-turned.  Went for perhaps 200m before another pit stop cos Grayson needed a chendol from a street side vendor.  By which time the whole group caught up, ate our desserts, filled up our drink bottles, took our group photos and all was jolly again.

Lunch of lobsters and crab was fantastic - beyond words.  Then finally the whole group cycled back slowly, perhaps averaging 22km/hr back to the jetty.  The guys took turns to accompany Lemna, so I cycled back with my buddies : Zi & Peter in our usual laugh and talk cycling style.

It was a nice ride.  66km at a relaxed pace really feels like nothing at all.  Really enjoyed this trip.  I hope the active recovery also removed most of the lactic acid from my sore leg muscles.

The run AFTER the bad-tempered run

Too lazy to drive to East Coast to do the long distance run.  I thought I'll just lap along the Ghim Moh canal, gives me more sleep :)

Training plan calls for a 32km, but I have been feeling lousy, tired and 'heaty'.  I tried to rest Wednesday, but got tempted to go Climbers Lab... Then I persuaded an already closed medical hall to open to sell me 3 bottles of 凉茶, but the same temptress gave it all away!

This must be the hardest run I've done.  It was all mental all the way.  I called it quits when the scorching heat got to me and my knees started to hurt bad.  The good thing is that toes, ankles, lungs, rest of me feels ok.  Just the knees.

Best recovery is active recovery, I'll cycle off the lactic acid tomorrow.  Gonna go slow with Lemna and then u-turn when I see my buddies return.

KNS - Tg Pagar walkover

Truly KNS!

For all the hype, I thought I might be able to vote for the first time in my life.  As it turns out, Tanjong Pagar is the only constituency to not have contest.  Sheesh.

Last elections Buona Vista is categorized under Holland-Bukit Panjang.  Ironically, if there were no change, I'd have had a chance to vote.

Sigh.

Carrying on in trying times

Trying times indeed.  Things are certainly not going the way I envisioned it to be.

Perhaps I'm just tired.  Didn't climb well last night and this morning, I woke up with a sore throat, started running, thinking all will be well.  Normally by the 7-8km mark, I start to kick in strong and feel on top of the world... But this time around, I was along Ghim Moh canal & stupid Runkeeper kept losing GPS signal.  Which is fine, except stop interferring with my music!  I must've stopped like 5x to attempt to fix it, growing increasingly irate.

I finally lost it along Ghim Moh canal after I've done 1 round (meant to run 2 rounds).  At 8.2km, I quit Runkeeper, switched to music, since I still had another round of the canal to do.  Then music too started to petter in/out.  WTF.  I quit and actually walked the 4km home.  Yes, all the way, in the sun, seething, grumbling.

My mantra has always been that sports is fun.  If not fun, then go home.  It's not fun anymore and I have 1 more month and since it's the last stretch, also the hardest month.  Sigh.
As I walked that 4km home, thoughts of frustration filled my mind.  And then I recall Job.  Now I realize I am nowhere close to Job's predicament, but Job could praise God thru it all.  And so will I.  I praise you the Almighty and I worship you as my Lord.  I will trust in you and surrender totally to Your will.

Marathon Diary : week 11

It's getting tiring, my legs feels so old.  I am not looking forward to the next 5 weeks of clocking mileage.

This week I need to do a 13km and a 32km run.  Groan!

From my last run on Good Friday, where I ran 2 loops of the 10km trail at Macritchie.  It's been a really long time since the last time I ran the 10km trail, a bitter-sweet reacquaintance with the hills and slopes.  Parts of it made me smile from the memories I had, but most of the time, I was just exhausted.  I forget how steep the hills are and how rocky the path gets in part.  But the uneven & steep slopes are good training.

Happy Easter!

This is going to be a happy weekend. Saturday is Jo's wedding & Sunday is Easter. Double yay!

Holy Week

Last week of Lent before Easter!  I'm eagerly awaiting Sunday!

Last Saturday was Jo's hens night and it was a good break to hang out, sleep together in a hotel room just like old times again, except this time in a drunken stupor, so it was not anything memorable.  A pity.

The next morning I went to a New Creation church service with the gals, forgetting that it's Palm Sunday!  Gasp!  But I was glad I went.  Zi always commenting that she does not live "under law, but by grace", which to my very Catholic upbringing, doesn't sound right theologically.  The sermon by Paster Prince himself was ironically on that topic.

Jesus himself said, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill." Matthew 5:17.

Paster Prince's teaching was not to focus solely on the law like the Pharisees and miss the forest for the trees, nor to attempt to follow the law using your own effort, you're doomed to fail.  His point was, use God's grace because with God's grace, you will end up being a good follower anyways (which I presume will also result in obedience to law).  Now I understand.

Into the last stretch, I will endeavor to attend mass every day this week, especially the Triduum, with His grace (see, I learn fast, not on my own effort, but His).

Did I say hot? Can it get hotter... I fear it just did.

Mom and I had our first full out fight.  Wasn't pleasant.  She's been all stressed out since Mattie was born.  I mean, Ian & Michy hasn't even requested or put any serious burdens on us.  Just every now and then mom needs to buy fresh produce from the market so the confinement lady can cook daily meals.  Besides we eat there often anyways.

I got a glimpse again of the sheer anger she has in her.  And how the anger self-fuels itself in a horrifying vicious cycle.  She yells, which gets her angrier, results in more yelling - and I've seen her do 2 hrs straight of pure anger (4 years ago).

Today I got but a glimpse because I was trying to drive with her yelling at me and I just couldn't cope and so I pulled into a bus stop and she got off in a hissy fit, slamming the door hard for good effect.  (Poor Roar - yes baby I still love you even if grandma doesn't care.)

What really terrifies me is how much anger she has in her, still!  Stiring up memories of 4 years ago.  Perhaps I really need to work overseas forever.  Naiveté perhaps, it is clear we can never co-exist the way other mother-daughters can.  I had 9 months of peace won by a 3 year absence.

This sucks.  Literally.  Been trying to drink away an insatiable thirst all day and watching Grey's Anatomy for therapy.

Oh, if only it's 21degrees here in the day time too...

Longest run this season

Did a 29km (I stopped Runkeeper early cos I was disgustingly walking back...).

Managed to run consistently for 23km, then Jo called me and I couldn't restart afterwards.  Pain was too much, hurts everywhere, left little toe, ankles, knees, even my sides were aching.  I walked the remaining 6km back to F2 carpark, with growing self-disgust.... The views though are fantastic, I finally had to stop by a breakwater, to stare at our shipping lane horizon.  Very pretty, in a very Singaporean sense.  By the time I was done and out of East Coast Park, it was noon - I had started running at 7:30am.

My running speed is quite consistent ~7:40min/km but it's slow, I need to push it to under 7mins/km, in order to finish under 5 hours.  Hmmm...

Running our usual cycle route was a great idea.  Nice and straight, no need for a gazillion laps nor any traffic lights.  Was enjoyable other than the mid morning heat.

Post run calves aches are killing me though.  All stairs are subjected to cursing as I navigate them with the same trepidation as Zi inching down dirt trails.  I wonder if I should join the professionals and get those compression calf guards.  Hey if it's good enough for Paula Radcliff, it's good enough for me!

Can't take pressure no more?

With Mattie's arrival, suddenly life is no longer as my earlier lazy unemployed lifestyle.

There are errands to help out with, stuff to buy like nappies, fetch the confinement lady, drive mom over after she has gone to the wet market to buy fresh food...

Even my usual wake up and drive to midday mass has been difficult to make.  Cos I usually need to drive mom over to the house and she simply has no patience to wait - plus raw meats needs refrigeration.

The consolation is that Mattie has been worth the stress.  He's just perfect.  Except he is such a hungry kid he is wearing his poor mom down.  Had an intimate moment with Mattie just now so his mom can sleep for half an hour - we took a tour of Godma's car, said 1 Hail Mary together and prayed for Mattie to grow big and strong without much fuss.

All the things that are not going well in life (and there is a lot!), somehow feels smaller.  Sister Lily told me to focus on gratitude.  Ok here goes, my list of what I should be thankful for :
- family.  I can't imagine living without my family.
- friends.  Zi, Jo and Francis (in no particular order).  You guys rock.
- sporting opportunities.  The run, climb, jog & sporting weekends - fantastic!
- knowing that Jesus still loves and cares.  I just don't get His plan now, it does not diminish His love for me.
- my car.  Ok, a little materialistic here.  But I am genuinely grateful for Roar.  I'm sorry Roar that I drained your battery in a dumb blond moment, hope the jumpstart didn't shock you too much.
- Internet & my iPhone.  Keeps me sane providing distraction.

Ok, I give up.  There's more, but I can't think.  Tomorrow Mattie's grand-aunts (my ah-bohs) are going to visit him.  Let's pray he's on best behaviour to 见客.

Views of a sore and battered cyclist

It did not start off well.  The plan was to park at F2 carpark which is well frequented (and hence safe to leave the car overnight), cycle the 3km to Tanah Merah ferry terminal, so it's free parking and yet close enough.  However, I led Zi almost all the way to Changi village before realizing we've missed the turn.  Some 11km, mentally distraught, 1 hour late and a bloodied elbow later (fell with cleats again), we arrived at the ferry terminal.  I wanted to go home, really....

Thankfully I endured.  The trip was great fun.  I really enjoyed the cycling, even though it was hilly ALL the way!  We conquered 190km of hills over 3 days in the blazing hot tropical heat.  And now I feel much more comfortable with my cleats.  Yes, do not waste the cancer!

Bintan's road conditions were surprisingly good - for the most part.  We only encountered 1 or 2 bad patches, lasting at most a couple of kms.  And the logistics were very well organized.  We had 2 support vehicles, 1 in the front which carried ice cold drinks for us and also led the way, and a pickup at the back to picks up quitters.  On the first day cycling in, we cycled portions of stage 1 of the route for Tour de Bintan.  It was totally deserted (no cars at all!), freshly tarred, with rolling steep hills.  That was when I learnt that Corinna could climb a 60degree gradient hill, turn back to glance at you or snap your photo whilst still climbing, then continue on her way as if it were flat ground.  Sigh...

We stayed at the Ocean Bay resort over by Teluk Bakau, our contact was their manager, Tracy Ho (tel +62811699571), email tracy-ho@yahoo.com.sg or info@oceanbaybintan.com.  The rooms was rustic (read toilet flushes directly into sea and no AC) but they more than compensated with excellent service.  We had way too many meals including tea break & supper on top of lunch/dinners, they had a housekeeping cart which came by and they'd change your sheets daily, and I really liked how they tried to comply with all requests (giving Zi 4 hardboiled eggs for her carbo load after day 2 or 124km for her special tea break).

I also learnt that Peter can do a really mean job of massage - I was almost putty after his shoulder massage, thankfully my knees didn't buckle afterwards.

Group was a motley bunch of very easy going, lots of easy laughter. Dan is an OB doctor with a mean sense of humour and he was part of the team on the first test tube babies.  Kevin (the organizer) is an ENT doctor, there's also a lawyer and a professional entertainer within the group.  Ezi (the entertainer) loves Zi and called her 'babyface'.  Oh yeah, not sure why, but Zi was rather popular ie she got teased a lot by everyone.

Yeah, I had fun.  Only downside was Matthaeus Cheng had to make his appearance while I was away!  But I've explained to him, he seems ok with it.  I may be biased, but he is really good looking!  Perfect proportion facial features, long-limbed and very soft hair.

Bike trip to Bintan

To begin with, I hesitated. I didn't enjoy the last 2 trips with the same people - albeit climb trips.

And Monica, Munch all these icky people are going.

But Zi asked me to go, & I figured, since i've not cycled Bintan, wth.

Trying to sort out logistics of getting ourselves & our bikes to Tanah Merah ferry terminal, Zi & I decided on parking at my aunt's place in Loyang then cycle the 9km to the ferry terminal.

Yesterday, Peter called. He said and i quote 'Monica keep asking me how to get there'. Hmmm. Somehow he now owns the responsibility of getting her there? He then asked if I wanted to also cycle the 30-40km there with them.

No, Peter, I don't want to cycle that distance ahead of the 70-80-70km I have to cover in the next 3 days.

Besides, I have given and looked out for Monica from 2003 thru to 2007. And most of 2nd half of last year. She can go leech off someone now.

On life & death

Yz saved an old man's life when his motorcycle died on ECP's fast lane.  She valiantly waited, shielding him with her car while he tried to restart the engine.  It couldn't restart.  Thankfully 2 cops came by on motorcycles and they took over.  Who knows how many lives she saved that night by preventing a horrible accident from happening considering how it was late, on the fast lane, downslope & on a curve.  Worse, the failed motorcycle had no lights at all!

On death.  I murdered a baby lizard.  Stepped on it in the dark on my way to the bathroom last night.

O the frailities of life.  The only certainties are death & taxes.  Depressing, I know...

Cycling on cleats

Any difference? Other than a phobia of slowing down & re-starting, no difference.

Perhaps I should try a higher cadence, see if I can still maintain a constant speed.

Third in line

When Michelle needs the hospital to deliver Mattie, I'm third in line she will call to drive her. After Ian & her dad.

Hmm...

Biking is expensive...

Back tyre deflated again when I went to check on it today.

On closer inspection, Speedy had picked up a bit of glass embedded in the back tyre.  I needed a new back tyre, yet another inner tube and since I was at it, threw in cleats & shoes.  Total damage, $220.  Yep, I went the whole hog.  Oh & no more Bukit Timah road cycling - just way too much debris on that road!

Now sport a grazed left knee (it's been bleeding all evening, ow, ow!) and a bruised right palm.  Yes, I fell 3 times in the parking lot of Rodalink learning to cycle with cleats.  First fall, I was heading for curbside and then fell over.  Second & third fall, I was learning to stop.  It seems logical you'd unclip feet, plant feet on floor then brake right?  Apparently, Hussein had to explain that sequence to me.  Duh!

While I was in Rodalink, this guy with his family in tow was also buying stuff.  He's Filipino, was in town competing at last weekend's Aviva Ironman.  I helped him google Treknology's address and we struck up a little conversation.  He asked if I too took part in the Ironman.  While my head swelled to the size of Michelle's bloated stomach, I humbled replied no, I'm just a beginning trying not to fall to her death with her new cleats.

Methinks I look the part of an athlete!  :)

Tyre woes

Cycling home after the climb at Yishun was just miserable. First it rained along Mandai. Waited out the rain along a bus stop.

When the rain stopped, Derek & I resumed the ride home.

Cycling behind him on the wet roads is just utterly miserable. His back tyres were spraying onto me even if I kept a healthy distance & when it rained hard again, I decided to stop at Bukit Timah road. Derek continued on.

Rain quit again & I tried to cycle home alone but then my back tyre popped & deflated.

Taxi took me straight me to Rodalink to fix what must be my 4th flat in 3 weeks.

I just found my back tyre totally deflated. Again. It'll be 5th flat in as many weeks.

Arghhh!

Trying times

Combination of being jobless unexpectedly long, hot sweltering weather then getting drenched in pouring rain, deciding to cycle and discovering your back tyre's totally flat & the feel of Lent...

Patience, patience, patience, ooommmmm

Bad ears

I had gotten off the boat 5 days ago, my ears unfortunately have yet to realize that.  Snap back to normalcy will you, my left ear drum?  Annoyed!

You know, I've always thought diving in the longer run isn't too great on your body.  All that pressure and nitrogen build up can't be too healthy.   Hmm...

Diving Similan Islands on the MV Black Manta

I've heard of the Similans years ago and about manta ray encounters.  So really I've been looking forward to this dive trip for a long while.

Similans on Black Manta was a really good trip.  I correct myself, the best dive I've ever had.  That dive where there was an octopus at my feet, changing colors and then I choose to abandon it because the manta ray was about to swoop over my head again. Video of Octopus   Yes, it just circled us in huge circles over and over again.  The entire dive, all 45 mins. We were warned to approach the manta, to let it come to you & it did, over and over again, for all of the 45mins.  Awesome!  While it was not my first sighting of manta ray, it is the closest and best view I've ever gotten (possibly, ever will get again!).

The next day, we got our leopard shark sighting, it was almost 2m long.  I had enough time to squeeze at least 4 or 5 shots before some idiot came in too close and scared it off.

After that, our greed quotient went up & we were hankering for whale shark sighting.  But no, we were already very blessed.

Last dive of the trip was a scary experience for me. Visibility was perhaps 5m max - it was murky.  I descended with everyone, got to 18m, at Boonsung Wreck, near Koh Bon.  By the wreck, I glimpse a huge puffer and squeezed off 2 shots.  In that 3secs, I lost sight of everyone. I had mentally taken a directional bearing before I stopped but I guessed the group moved forward away from the wreck towards sandy bottom.  In any case, I saw no bubbles & no one save for me beside the wreck.  I freaked.  Made for the surface without safety stop.   Sheer panic.  Fortunately for me it was a quiet dive spot, no other boats around and I popped up right by the side of our boat.  The boat crew saw me, threw me a line and hauled me in.  Mental note to self - 1. stay close to group when vis is bad, no fish photo is worth the panic! And 2. I need to start noting direction using the compass, be prepared to navigate myself back if necessary.

The only negative I had of the trip was the quality of the dive guides.  Dive guide lost me twice.  The earlier time I infiltrated another group, and somewhere in between, found the group back myself.  On another dusk dive where we emerged in the dark, I had freaked out during safety stop when Philip didn't show up.  Tak Gee using hand signals said Philip had gone up by the mooring line.  Dive guide didn't care or notice someone's missing.  Terrible.  We had complained but it still happened.

Rest of Similans LOB dive photos here
Video done up by Tak Gee (compliation of all our photos including mine)
Video using a HD videocam by Wing from HK

Everything else was perfect.  From the weather to the really fantastic Thai crew.  They were incredibly considerate, they'd even stick your fins on for you!  The kitchen crew and cook are fantastic!  The food was sooooo good!  Every single meal was great and we ate 5 meals a day, from my normal 2 meals a day!

There'll be a new boat, called the new White Manta.  Bigger and the cabins will be above water surface so no funny smells.  Starts in a few months and it'll sail to Layang Layang!  Hammerhead sharks!  Tempting...

Excuse me, are you a runner - part 2

So last year some kaypo asked if I were a runner while I was in the Motorola pantry.

Last week while in the airport bus leaving Japan, these 2 women asked if I was also in Japan for the Tokyo Marathon. Well... I must look the part right?!! *beam*

Apparently cos I was wearing running shoes. Hmmm.

OCBC Cycle 2011 - the night after

I should've taken the cue when Derek gestured at some clearly neophyte cyclists & said "beware these kinds".

Spent the 40km race, zig-zagging, yelling communications warnings "on your right, RIGHT!!!", a whole lot of start/stops - including a total standstill for an ambulance to get in. Saw quite a few spills this race - my guess caused by those weaving neophyte cyclists doing 10km/hr.

The last 10km became easier, smoother most likely because I had cleared most of those weaving, right lane hogging lousy cyclists doing 10km/hr. Of cos by then I started to tire a little valiantly attempting to hold 30km/hr speeds...

In the past, before a triathlon, I used to strip out every extra component on the bike that added weight - bags, lights, everything off.  Speed was everything.  Old habits die hard, I stripped my bag but kept my lights on for safety while cycling to/from event.  Now on hindsight, I should've just kept everything on - OCBC did not feel like a race at all!

My first ever cycling medal (single discipline ie)...

Oh and parking was a royal pain! Arranged with Derek to meet in front of Singapore Swimming Club but due to road blocks, he wasn't able to get there & parked elsewhere. My woes began trying to get to his new venue, plus my unfamiliarity with that area. Got lost again for almost an hour attempting to return to the car. Mental note to self - park in an area you are familiar with.

Nontheless a nice morning out cycling. And I pray that those hurt in the spills are ok - ambulance got in & out real quick.

Ode to a dog

There never was a furrier dog
Or a fighter that lived life-long.
I ne'er believe in heaven for dogs
But maybe some special fur balls ought!
Jesus could use a foot warmer,
Or a cheerful rug that also licketh

Cheer up Zi :)

OCBC Cycle 2011 - the night before

I dare say this is my first cycling (single discipline) race ever.

So I am a little excited.

Will drive over to Singapore Swimming Club to rendezvous with Derek & Melvin, we'll then all cycle over to the starting line at the Grand Prix F2 pits.

My bike is tagged, race transponder tied to my tyre fork, helmut marked with my race number & I've just pinned my race number onto my cycling jersey.

I am no. 5170 :)

Bring it on!

This is great!

So usually it's only in Aug that you get all all red, white & patriotic.

But seriously, this song leaves a lump in my throat, probably from being away for too long.

Sudah jadi ta-ide, sudah loopa...

"Sudah jadi ta-ide, sudah loopa".

My mom said that to me yesterday.  In peranakan malay, translated loosely, means after you've eaten and digested, you forget.

It happened cos I wanted mom to cook bubur-hitam and she said she just bought me that dessert a couple of weeks ago. It was when I couldn't recall that, was when she said "sudah jadi ta-ide, sudah loopa", essentially her meaning was, you are an ingrate, you forget cos you've already eaten & digested.

And that's how I feel about Moo. You take & never once thought of anyone else but yourself. Cycling past me that night when my bike's chain fell off, that is not cool. But it reinforces who you are. Walking away in times of trouble, that just ain't cool.

Depressed

I am NOT happy!  To cope, I watched Grey's Anatomy season 7 episodes 1 to 10, took a break in Japan (I was happIER there, distracted with being a tourist), returned home to promptly watch the remaining 6 episodes at a go.

Yes, I watched until 4:15am this morning.

And yes, I am still depressed, in fact, worse because I woke up late and missed midday mass with Quek I Gek after I PROMISED her I'll be there with her.  This is not going well....

Here, I'll friggin list it out :
- I have no job, no man in my life, no sense of purpose, no own home
- Z just broke up with a great guy, about to not have a job, and her pet of 17+ yrs died last night
- A has 6 weeks til HP throws him out the door, he has 2 kids & a wife.  Just like that, unceremoniously pulling the rug out from under your feet.  I hate what HP has become, souless & mecernary.  WTF.
- J is under so much stress, no thanks to a lousy boss, and all the pressures of getting herself to wedding bells in church

Someone give me some good news, I'll settle for anything at this point!

Actually, I've gotten worse at this point.  I just realized I have no more episodes of Grey's Anatomy to watch & it's my only therapy since I am not running according to my marathon training plan & not working out & generally just a slug at home (my mom's home to be specific).   ARGGH.

Kill me now.

Blessed are the poor in spirit

First sister Lily says this to me, and then I got one of those Christian emails yesterday & it was again on 'the poor in spirit'.

I googled it and Catholic Encyclopaedia says,
The word poor seems to represent an Aramaic 'ányâ (Hebrew 'anî), bent down, afflicted, miserable, poor; while meek is rather a synonym from the same root, 'ánwan (Hebrew 'ánaw), bending oneself down, humble, meek, gentle. Some scholars would attach to the former word also the sense of humility; others think of "beggars before God" humbly acknowledging their need of Divine help. But the opposition of "rich" (Luke 6:24) points especially to the common and obvious meaning, which, however, ought not to be confined to economical need and distress, but may comprehend the whole of the painful condition of the poor: their low estate, their social dependence, their defenceless exposure to injustice from the rich and the mighty. Besides the Lord's blessing, the promise of the heavenly kingdom is not bestowed on the actual external condition of such poverty. The blessed ones are the poor "in spirit", who by their free will are ready to bear for God's sake this painful and humble condition, even though at present they be actually rich and happy; while on the other hand, the really poor man may fall short of this poverty "in spirit".

So it's an attitude you adopt, where you lean heavily on God for your needs.

March is going to be a great month yet

Feb 24 to Mar 1 - Japan trip
Mar 9 to 14 - LOB diving in the Similans
In discussion with mom for Mar 22 to 26 - Taiwan again.

I think I might just love this month!

Japan - my maiden voyage

I had fun visiting Japan.
I realize how blessed I am, I picked the 2 hotels : Green Plaza Hakone was recommended by Meihar & Quemo - it offered fantastic views of Mount Fuji from our room!  Tokyo where we panic-ed a little because we booked a little late and our first choices were unavailable, I picked the Tokyo Prince Park from Tripadvisor and it was fantastic too!  From the room windows, you get view of Shiba Park and the Tokyo Towers.  Awesome view & the room is big and really comfortable.

And Elmo was really nice.  I literally just followed her around and she was willing to go do sightseeing with me even though she'd rather be shopping.  All the museums, galleries, observatories, parks, palaces, shrines, she mostly did for me!
All the other 300+ pictures here.

Sakura!

My first trip to Japan & I got to meet up with my good buddy Emily!

Thanks to Emily, I mostly just followed her around since she can read a little of the Japanese kanji and also she does Japanese-accented English waaay better than me. :)   E.g. Glass museum, you say, gu-la-shi no-mo-ri or something to that effect!  And she can navigate the confusing network of Tokyo's trains cum MRT - every other station is an interchange station between a couple of lines, you really need to pre-plan your route.

We were blessed with really super good weather.  Weather so good, we had an awesome view of Mount Fuji from our room!  And even after we got back to Tokyo, weather was so great, the Tokyo Tower just behind us looms huge!  Today however, it rained and then sleet, and finally snow - maybe slush is more appropriate.  It got below zero.  My right hand got so cold it was painfully tinggling.

We did it all, most of the touristy things.  Meiji Shrine, City View, Palace, flagship store of Mikimoto in Ginza, Shinjuku, Takeshita, lots of museums and art galleries from Hakone to Tokyo, outlet shopping at Gotempa, dressed in yukata for dinner, gazed at Mount Fuji... I didn't realize we got so much done in so few days.

And I forgot what a shoppaholic Elmo is, she browses EVERYTHING, from socks, to trinklets to touristy souvenirs, even 福 (lucky charms issued by Japanese temples which can be purchased for all purposes, from health to traffic safety!).

I turned down a role because I don't want to relocate again

Just turned down a Dell role to be based in Sydney because I'm not ready to leave Singapore.

He said he thought my experience was pretty "close to what he was looking for in the candidate" but it needs to be based in Sydney and if I couldn't, then the interview ended.

Am I crazy?  Perhaps I'll call him 1 month from now...

Bleeh...

Grey's Anatomy season 7

Season 7 started sometime September last year. I can't believe I didn't realize it until Michelle mentioned over the weekend. I am a big fan!

Anyhow, problem fixed with my little netbook downloading all night last night all 15 episodes of season 7.

Just saw episode 1 - edgy with the doctors coping with the deaths from the mass shootings!

What are weekends for?

I recall the my highlight of weekends while living in Taipei was finding a new restaurant to try out. Totally worthless self-indulgence but something I took seriously.

The highlight of this weekend was cycling the 52.5km round trip to Yishun rockwall.

Zi & I did that perhaps 5 years ago & we were so tired after climbing, her dad came to get us.

This time around we cycled both ways despite crazy traffic, horribly bumpy road surface along Bt Timah Road, and a heavy downpour which we waited out sitting at Yishun coffeeshop, stuffing my face with mee rebus, a chicken wing & some of Zi's noodles.

Best!

It never rains, it pours

Not a good day.

1. At 7:30am realize now front tyre of bicycle has gone flat. After some &:))@ at Rodalink, I had to inform Derek no cycling for me.

2. The Malaysian motorcyclist called me asking for $. Said his bike needs 2 months to fix. Either I give him $800 or he'll sue me for 2 months loss of earnings. Even though he admits damage only to his handlebars. Are they made of gold?!! And 2 months to repair? Spaceship or scooter? Madness.

3. Right after that call, when the phone rang again, I thought it was the greedy bloodsucker. But it was a shocked Jo who just rear-ended a car. She couldn't stop in time & was sobbing over the phone. The toll of work pressures, wedding preparations & all really getting to her. Let's pray for Jo.

And I pray for everyone tonight. May Jesus reign always.

PS just found out Michy beat me at Bejeweled Blitz. Grr!

Need to drive carefully this year...

First thing this morning, I called Liberty insurance to find out how to get Roar fixed asap.  They took down my particulars and told me to go to a Liberty prefered workshop to report.  I selected a few in the AMK/Sin Min area and googled them for good reviews in the local auto forums, and decided on 3.

Then headed out for midday mass at Novena then to the auto repair place.  Francis had jio-ed me for midday mass and I went, but our friend didn't!  But he called and we agreed to meet at Sin Min.

The first shop at Sin Min quoted me $600+, my excess is $600, means I'll be poorer by $600+ out of pocket.  Gah!

By that time, Francis had arrived, inspected the damage himself and felt he could fix it himself.

So I reported the accident for insurance, but chose not to fix it there.

Then Francis helped me shove the headlight back into place & presto, it looks like no repair needed.  Totally saving $.

But to bust my short-lived joy, I got stuck a $50 parking fine for parking at the loading/unloading bay.  I hate this year of the Rabbit.

Bike fixed

At Rodalink, they fixed my back tyre. Speedy is good again. Roar next.

2 days into the year of the Rabbit & it's been bang no. 2

Derek arranged a dawn cycle on day 2 of the lunar new year.  When I got there to the carpark 10mins after 7, everyone was already there, save Jispal who was still cycling to East Coast...  Early bird catches the worm!

I didn't get any worms, I got more bad luck.

My back tyre was totally flat - must've picked up something at the Singapore Duathlon 2 weeks ago (thankfully didn't explode on me during the race).

Corinna (so sweet) handpumped up my tyre - in the process, because her bike was unattended, some angmo woman carelessly knocked Corinna's bicycle to the ground.  Stupid angmo!  And when I started to ride, the back tyre deflated totally again.  This time, Derek, Melvyn & Robert changed the tube and pumped it up using Robert's gas canister (instant pumped up tyre).  Thankfully it lasted the ride, but the super pumped up tyre deflated itself after the ride, while I was driving home (3rd time deflating itself today).  Something is seriously wrong with the back tyre - possible a spoke is out of alignment or something.  GAH!  I need to take care of both my wheels : car and bicycle.

All of us outside the public toilets by the beach.  Incidentally, the guys carried their babies (read expensive bicycles) into the toilet with them.  Don't ask me which they were holding & how....

So in these eventful few days, I also count Michy's dad reversing his Mercedes and running down his home gate accident, Corinna's near death at the hands of an awful angmo driver as blessings.  Because collateral damage is nothing as long as nobody's hurt.

I wish everyone a happy year of the rabbit and God's divine protective blood over every square inch of our bodies.  Be safe, be in Jesus' shadow!

Into the Year of the Rabbit with a bang (literally)

First day of the lunar new year, I was driving mom, Bo Dae (4th aunty's husband) & aunty Florence over to Ah Neo's (eldest aunty) house.

I was planning to drop them off so they can start their annual mahjong session while I sneak home for a quick nap then return at dinner time.

As I approached & prepared to turn towards the lift lobby, mom suddenly yelled, I slammed on brakes but too late, collided with a motorcycle.

The Malaysian motorcycle didn't topple over : impact wasn't that bad. But their legs hit the car, so both of them rubbed their shins for a long while. I was shocked, offered to call an ambulance but the 2 Malaysians declined it, he kept repeating "my bike is very expensive". That plus it's a Malaysian plate, really worried us. Luckily I had Bo Dae & cousin Ah Yin's help. Bo Dae negotiated with them for a long time but finally they decided to report the accident.

Ah Yin accompanied me to the police station where we lodged a report. On Monday after the holidays, I'll fill in paperwork with the car insurers.

Then later, I received a call from the Malaysian, he wanted to know who'll pay his medical bill & when I told him that since we agreed to report it, he should claim insurance. He then stumped me with "my insurance got no $".

Sigh.

No point crying over spilt milk & will resist implications to the new year.  Get Roar fixed up & then move on.

Tuesday, February 01, 2011

Happy birthday Pa!

I still miss him after all these years...

Arigato Japanese people!

I've never visited Japan before... unless you count Narita airport, then yeah, I've been to Japan at least 20x!

Since I'm still sitting around and by now doing very little, might as well go visit another place that I've hitherto not been to.

Going to meet up with the Elmo there and we are calling the trip, "Operation Find 2 Marriageable Japanese Hunks".  On a secondary note, we're also visiting Mount Fuji so I can gawk at the dormant volcano with my own eyes and the old capital city of Kyoto.  Oh, I forget, also spend time with Elmo and eat some yummy raw fish (NOT!).  Probably need to bring my own blowtorch and get everything cooked!

I'll be missing a 168km cycle race since I'll be in Japan, pity!

Races this year 2011

23 January : Singapore Dualthlon (CHECK!)

3 March : OCBC Cycle Singapore (Next!)

28 May : Adidas Sundown Marathon (Will I survive a full marathon again, perhaps night running might be easier?)

August : SAFRA Army Half-Marathon/ Bay Run (my favourite event, I love the scenary)

December : Singapore Marathon (I'll do the half again, just need to beat 2:55 to get Jo off my back)

Hopefully I'll stay in decent shape to race all of them to the best of my abilities!  Inshallah!

New Look!

New year, new look!

I've used my photo from the Taj Mahal trip because it's a watershed moment in my life : fulfilling a lifelong dream of seeing the Taj with my own eyes & being able to pursue happiness by leaving an unhappy job courageously.

There are more demons to battle in the days ahead, most of them in the form of my human relationships, but with God under my wing, what have I to fear...

What a blast: Singapore Duathlon 2011

Had a great outing at yesterday's race. Weather was a little hot but otherwise perfect.

I had a rough goal of 3hours and if not for withering in the last 5km run, I'd have kept to that. According to my trusty pink Timex, first 10km 1:07, 36.36km cycle 1:29, last 5km 0:44. Plus transition wastage time I finished at 3:17.

Good start to 2011. Next race : OCBC 40km cycle in March.

Need a job

Many phone & F2F interviews, text/email/Linked In messages, friends who forwarded JDs/headhunter contacts...

I know I don't want a job with Electolux (vacuum cleaners?!!) nor a role to be based in Taiwan again.

Otherwise, I'm open to all possibilities.

Oh and being able to interview in Chinese was interesting especially since the call was unexpected. My linguistic abilities astound even myself. My command of the Chinese language has not gone to the dogs... yet.

Guess what? Exciting updates!

Er.. Nothing much happening of late.

Ok, started to run a little more regularly as preparations for Sunday's duathlon but otherwise nothing exciting nor happy to report.

Sigh...

Happiness - where art thou?

I can't believe how everything soured so quickly.

It was only a few months ago, I was happy.  New job, coming home to kakis who were willing to kill themselves with me on a daily basis, actually found some who were even more hardcore than myself and Zi (gasp! they exist?!), new beginnings, new hope, and when Zi became my colleague, that was really nice (albeit smelly toilets, but small price to pay).

So here I am... New year, new promise, stay positive.

Ecclesiastes Chapter 3
There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens.
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant.
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to tear down, and a time to build.
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.
A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them; a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.
A time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away.
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to be silent, and a time to speak.
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Alamak - kena rapped by God

Today's reading from 1 Jn 4:19–5:4.

Beloved, we love God because he first loved us.  If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.  Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves also the one begotten by him.  In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments.

For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments.  And his commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world.  And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.

VO2Max

Started out as a casual chat between 2 belayers at Yishun...  between SJ & myself.  She moved to work in a US hospital but will be back in July for good.

I must've bitched to her about decreasing fitness vis-a-viz my age and she mentioned that VO2Max is different for each individual body.  That she has problems pushing her VO2Max levels up regardless of how hard she runs, compared say to someone else who naturally has high VO2Max.

Hmm... at that point, I realize I missed her!  I recall a similar conversation with her (goodness knows how long ago) about fast and slow twitched muscles and I believe she reassured me that my muscles are mostly slow twitched, hence better suited for climbing than a quick sprint to the finish with Zi.

Yeah, I like talking to SJ cos 1, she is very reassuring & uses technical mumbo-jumbo to make you feel good & 2, she is smart.  Of cos, smart and on your side is always a nice feeling!

Back to earlier topic - need to be encouraging to people around me this year.  Please excuse me now while I go watch 爱, in the process decreasing my VO2Max.

Pompeii - Life in a Roman town 79CE

Visited the exhibits at the National Museum yesterday.  Joined the guided tour and got a pretty good narrator, I didn't know that this is the first time they are exhibiting stuff outside of Pompeii itself - we are blessed, Singapore!

It ranged from interesting (Pompeii people ate out a lot in restaurants, cafes 2000 years ago!), to funny (there was a mosiac floor warning to 'beware of dog', just like us today!), to religious (there was no traces of Christianity even though Jesus had already died & resurrected earlier), to sad (the plastic casts moulds of people/animals in death).

A good exhibit, well worth visiting.  Am glad I went on a week day so it wasn't too crowded.  Yeah, there were still strangely, a lot of visitors.

What is love?

From 1 Corinthians 13.

Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.

It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.  For we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

This is why I feel I ought to keep it up for Moo - because firstly, my gestures are kind.  And I endure it.  This is love (how I feel about it, ie emotions set aside).

Godfrey

hello!

sitting close-by

dozing at my feet

Calvin had found a lost dog, another snautzer, while walking Josh & Toby. He waited in the park with the lost dog for a while then went home.

He asked if mom & I if we would dog-sit Godfrey for a few weeks since 3 dogs in 1 HDB flat is a little bit to manage.

How'd we know he's called Godfrey (means God's peace)? Well when Calvin first saw Godfrey, he was running with a few kids and the kids were yelling Godfrey, actually they were saying "got 3", ie 3 snautzers. After he told us the story, we all had a good laugh, Godfrey is not a typical dog name. My mom better yet, asked innocently, how do you spell it, like "got free"? Groan.

Godfrey is a real sweetie. He is obedient and really easy to manage. Unfortunately, the next day after finding Godfrey, Calvin found a lost dog notice. He was however, very reluctant to return Godfrey and so we kept him another day.

Godfrey has been returned to his owner and his real name is Mazda. It's funny cos he really responds to Godfrey, I tried yelling Peter and Kenny at him, no response.

I miss him already. He was really close to me. Went everywhere with me, even the bathroom. He pokes his head in and leaned towards the toilet bowl. Had to physically shove him back out to yells of 'hey, i need my privacy!'. But the smart dog learns, my next toilet stop, he waited like a good dog just outside the door.

He sleeps on an old bedsheet just by my bed and whenever I nap, he naps. When I watch TV, he dozes at my feet. Every evening he'll get really eager for walks and he'll beg by jumping on his 2 hind paws and try to climb up me, then he'll race to where his leash is and point with his nose. So adorable!

Yeah, I love dogs. But honestly, I don't want my own. I'm blessed enough that I can play with Calvin's Josh (who adores attention), Toby (who needs to inspect the house and everything in it) and Michy's Kino (really smart and super obedient, until you take him out for a walk, then the whole neighbourhood gets terrorized).

Some pictures of Godfrey, mostly of him lying on the floor beneath me.

Thanks Godfrey (or real name Mazda) for the memories the last 3 days.

So long 2010, hello 2011!

New year resolution time! I'm frankly not in the mood for it!

I am grateful for a lot : good friends who stoically stick around despite me not being the nicest friend back ; an amazing family ; experiences ranging from changing to losing jobs, India - a lifelong dream, having my own wheels again after 3 years of cabbing...

Guess the Lord has been much kind.

I hope in 2011 to,
- get married (hey, it's my blog and I'm gonna dream big)
- walk in the faith obediently
- be a better friend
- be good to my family
- find a suitable job with a mentoring boss
- be a good aunt/godma to Mattheus (I love u! Hi 5s!)
- buy my own apartment

Enuff. Let's not breed greed.

How to deal with betrayal

Ideally you see someone's true colors, find it unpleasant and make a beeline for the door.

Now how do you get rid of a lousy ex-friend who hasn't changed (still very much a taker & not shy about it) who's still hanging around the same social circles with you?

My Christian values says clearly to forgive, suck it up & love. But I just can't - not for a lousy person. It's not like charity, you just reach out and help. She's not needy, she's just a unrepentant taker, unabashedly so.

Telling her to her face what I feel about her would seem unkind. So what to do?

The reason for the season is Jesus.

Have a blessed Christmas everyone. May Jesus be in our lives always.

Jin boh eng

Other than a handful of meetings with headhunters and a couple of interviews, I should be free & relaxed. But I'm not.

Reminds me of Parkinson's Law, which states

Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.

Jin bo eng! Gotta go.

Mental note to self : no spicy food at lunch

Probably after being in Taiwan where with the exception of mala hotpot, is a very bland cuisine in general.

I now cannot stomach firey Korean or anything too spicy at lunch which is typically my first meal of the day.

Bleeh!

Almost Christmas

I spent the last weekend attempting to walk 50km.  I was greatly humbled, when I decided to quit at the 26km mark when we walked by Buona Vista MRT station.  The soles of my feet, my foot arc, my knees and shoulders were aching, but most of all, my right ankle was starting to throb real bad.  I figured, I could endure the pain and finish the walk, but since I was that close to home and my good buddies were quitting as well, I might as well throw in the towel.

Walking, apparently, isn't all that easy.  I thought I could go on and on... My aged body didn't think so.

I've hung up the Christmas wreath, I've gone to Penitential mass, now it's time to prepare my list of blessings this year.  So here goes :
- traveled a fair bit in 2010 : US, India, HK, Shenzhen in China, Krabi again.
- my mom and I are friends now.  It's truly amazing.  I enjoyed India with her!
- my health is good and I'm healthier/sportier amongst my hardcore buddies.
- my hardcore buddies who are nice enough to know when to suck it in and when to buy me lunch.  Aww...
- the really smooth transition back to Singapore while balancing the demanding job in Motorola.  I love my car!
- enjoying the break and catching up with friends in a relaxed way not possible with a full time job.
- upgrading my status to Aunt-to-be cum godma-to-be with Ian & Michy's baby.
- my family & friends who stuck by me through the icky times all thru the years.

Through the eyes of a tourist

I've been playing tour guide, showing Ashley around.  We had bak-kut teh then we had drinks at the Marina Bay Sands.  MBS I think that's what it's known as in short.  Place seems ok, if they were attempting at sophistication, then it's not quite there.  They did however, reject our entry to the top floor bar on account of my flip-flops.  I pleaded Ashley's Taiwan-ness to no avail.  They did accept my running shoes (thankfully kept it in the car).  It was a rainy day, and the bar was full.  So we settled ourselves for a drink at the downstairs lobby lounge.

Tomorrow I need to take her to Sentosa.  She seems to know exactly where she wants to go, makes my job easy :)

I'm baack, anyone missed me?

I needed a break from writing, not from a lack of content (I believe I can rant endlessly) but to calm myself down a little.

It's been rough of late. Emotionally, on the job front, and also I guess adaptation - much like a delayed reaction to my return to Singapore, straight into the thick of action.

I took 2 trips since quitting Motorola. India was another one of my longtime dreams, to see the Taj Mahal. And it was everything I imagined it to be, and way more! http://www.flickr.com/photos/8062670@N07/sets/72157625460539261/

Since my return, I've been surprisingly busy. There're still the sport activities with friends almost every night and in the day time, it's been either errands, or catching up with friends over lunch. Amazingly, it wasn't til Thu and Fri (yesterday & today) that I finally had a chance to sleep in.

I've still got a few more appointments to keep, IPL with Karen and I need to go shopping. Firstly to get a royal blue dress for Jo's wedding - I am to be Chinese MC & also 姐妹. Of all the friends I've done this for, this one should be the most fun. Looking forward to that.

Also on my to-do list : Christmas shopping. I tried, I honestly did. But it is too overwhelming walking the malls. A friend is going to donate $ she typically spends on Xmas gifts to charity this year. It's a little bit of a defeatist attitude in my case, but honestly, it sounds more practical.
